"pvalue":"The area of concentration is art history. However, to support our art collections the Asian Art Museum Library has research material covering not only art and archaeology but also history, religion, philosophy, folklore and folk culture, anthropology, literature, music, medicine and science. Many of these materials are very rare or nearly unique. In addition to books and periodicals, the library collections include archives and private papers, photograph collections, microtext material, as well as handscrolls and hanging scrolls and older printed and handwritten materials in a variety of formats.<br /><br />Among the Pre-Meiji Japanese & Japan related materials in the Library's special collections are: <br /><ul><li>3 hand painted illustrations of <i>kimono</i> and textile designs; </li><li>Over 80 19th century artist sketchbooks and illustrated books (<i>e-hon</i> and <i>manga</i>) including works by Hokusai, Keisai, Eisen, Toyokuni and others ; </li><li><i>Ansei kaisei on Edo dai ezu</i>(安政改正御江戸大繪圖).   Edited by Okadaya Kashichi.  Edo/Tokyo : Toto Shorin, 1859 Hand colored woodblock print mounted as a hanging scroll;</li><li>Late 18<sup>th</sup> century picture dictionary: <i>Kashiragaki zoho kinmo zui</i>(頭書増補訓蒙圖彙). (1789);</li><li><i>Soken kisho</i>(裝劔奇賞)  by Inaba Tsuryu published 1781. 7 volumes on swords and sword fittings, inro and netsuke.</li><li>Ikeda, <i>T&#333;ri. Shinran Sh&#333;nin goissh&#333;ki esh&#333;</i>(親鸞聖人御一生記繪抄). ca 1840-50 3 vols.;</li><li><i>Shaka hasso Yamato bunka</i>(釈迦八相倭文庫). Written by Mantei Oga & illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada.  Edo : Joshudo Juzo, 1856 (1861 printing), 2 volumes;</li><li>A first edition set of the three volume official report of the Perry expedition to Japan, published by the US government in 1856, signed by Commodore Perry;</li></ul><br />There are also a number of very notable and rare publications produced from the early Meiji into the Showa era in the collection."
